Gingerbread and the shapes it takes have a long history. An early form of gingerbread can be traced to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians who used it for ceremonial purposes. Gingerbread made an appearance in Europe when 11th-century Crusaders brought back ginger from the Middle East for the aristocrats' cooks to experiment with. As ginger and other spices became more affordable to the masses, gingerbread caught on.
An early European recipe for gingerbread consisted of ground almonds, stale breadcrumbs, rosewater, sugar and, naturally, ginger. The resultant paste was pressed into wooden molds. These carved works of art served as a sort of storyboard that told the news of the day, bearing the likeness of new kings, emperors, and queens, or religious symbols. The finished cookie might be decorated with edible gold paint (for those who could afford it) or flat white icing to bring out the details in relief.

Gingerbread Houses
The gingerbread house became popular in Germany after the Brothers Grimm published their fairy tale collection which included "Hansel and Gretel" in the 19th century. Early German settlers brought this lebkuchenhaeusle (gingerbread house) tradition to the Americas

Something just screams “CHRISTMAS” to me.
Things like biting into my Mom’s “Crescent Cookies” (Vanillekipferl in German), beautiful twinkling lights, and sipping on the seasonal Glühwein (pronounced kind of like “Glue Wine (Vine) “).  Luckily, there are so many wonderful German Christmas Traditions, it’s not hard to get into the holiday spirit.
Christmas and the Holidays is also the time for that famous Gluhwein!  While drinking it, it just warms your heart and makes everything happier!  There are so many variations of Gluhwein, so make it the way you like it.  There are no rules!

I can easily just go to the supermarket to pick up a bottle of pre-made German mulled wine, but there is just something special about making my German Grandfather’s Gluehwein recipe on Christmas Eve that makes me feel so warm, merry and bright (oh wait, that’s probably just the booze….)
If you are wanting a Non Alcoholic Gluhwein, you can make my KinderPunsch recipe at home as well.
Since I personally hate having to scroll for ages to get to a recipe, let’s just get right to the Glühwein recipe.  However, below the recipe card, I want you to stick around because I’ll go into detail about tips and tricks to making the perfect homemade Gluhwein, including variations for the best wine to mull, how to make mulled wine in a crockpot, how long you can store it, and more.
Tips on making the perfect cup of Gluhwein
1)  Do not boil your Gluhwein!  This might be one of the most important parts of making your German hot wine.  Making it in a crockpot is actually  pretty fool-proof on the no boiling issue.
2)  Best wine for Gluhwein!  There are many theories out there on what is the best wine to mull.  If you are lucky enough to be in Germany, a common wine to make Gluhwein with is Dornfelder from the Wurttemberg region.  But, if you can't get your hands on a Dornfelder, a few other wines work well also.....Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling.
3)  You don't need expensive wine as there are so many other flavors, spices and alcohol going into it!
4)  Gluhwein Recipe in the Slow Cooker!  While making it in the crock pot, you don't have to worry about the Gluhwein boiling, and this way, you can keep it warm and ready to serve at a moment's notice all evening long (ok, or all day.....we won't judge)
5)  How to Serve Gluhwein!  You can get as fancy or as simple as you want.....there are no set can pour it into a mug (if your spices are loose, be sure to strain them out first)  You can garnish with an orange peel for extra pizazz and even top with a few raisins and slivered almonds to really look fancy!  Enjoy!
If you have some special Gluhwein Recipes you would like to share......please post them on our Cleveland German Radio Show Facebook Page.  We would love to hear from you!

All dreams can come true if we have the courage to follow them.
And the best time to follow them is 'now'

Alle Träume können wahr werden, wenn wir den Mut haben, ihnen zu folgen.
Und die beste Zeit, ihnen zu folgen, ist "jetzt"

Wir müssen ja sowieso denken – warum nicht gleich positiv?
We need to think, anyway – why not think positively straight away?

Leben heißt nicht zu warten, bis der Sturm vorbeizieht, sondern lernen, im Regen zu tanzen.
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning to dance in the rain.

PEACE ON EARTH by Julie Potz

There is a place, so very far away,
Where it will take some time and work to get
There from today.
Bombs are just a myth, weapons just aren't there.
People don't have wars, but love and care and share.
They welcome everyone and share every meal;
Where everyone is happy and friendship is ideal.

We need to change our world; a lot of us already knew it.
Let's stop feeling sorry and get on to it!
So donate to the poor, sign petitions, yes!
Come on everyone, there is a God we shall impress.
For those who have passed, our dearly departed,
They are looking down, hoping we're kindhearted.
So let's not start a war, or fight over land.
Yet let us join together, hand and hand.
Some hearts are getting bigger, God knows it's true.
Those people with kind hearts could be me and you.

So let us spread some kindness.  Who knows what its worth?
Just join together in love.  "Peace on Earth, Peace on Earth."
